New raised pedestrian crossing, lighting, and landscaping at the northern end of Lonsdale Street near the Girrahween Street intersection.
A major upgrade to one of Canberra’s destination dining precincts is now complete, making the area safer and more attractive to visit for its thousands of residents, workers, and tourists.
Completed upgrades to Lonsdale Street, Braddon include four raised pedestrian crossings, wider footpaths, additional lighting, planted medians, and new public amenities such as seats, bike racks, and rubbish bins.
Raised pedestrian crossings have calmed traffic travelling along the street and prioritised pedestrians, making it easier to get between Braddon’s renowned shops, cafes, restaurants, and bars.
Wider paths, new furniture, and improved lighting have provided a better street experience with informal gathering spaces, and more outdoor dining opportunities.

The Lonsdale Street upgrades reflect community feedback on priorities for the area with consultation highlighting the importance of connectivity, access, and movement, and building a strong retail area that celebrates Braddon’s character.
Local residents’ group, the Braddon Collective, said the upgrades have been well received by the community and are already benefitting the area.
“We are so happy to see Lonsdale Street becoming a safer, more accessible, and truly people-friendly place. The new wombat crossings have hugely improved the look and feel of the area.
“These are the first-ever pedestrian crossings in Braddon and they were long overdue in one of Canberra’s densest and busiest suburbs. We’re really pleased with the result and love seeing so many people using them!”

The Lonsdale Street upgrades also include important safety and heat reducing features.
Work is underway on the next stage of the Braddon streetscape upgrade at the Elouera and Mort Streets intersection. The existing roundabout has been removed to make way for a new raised intersection which will feature pedestrian crossings, improved lighting, wider verges, and new garden beds.
The Elouera and Mort Streets intersection upgrade is expected to be completed before the end of 2024. The intersection is anticipated to reopen to traffic in August, however work will continue around the intersection after it reopens.

While major works have been completed on Lonsdale Street, we may return for some minor works including plant maintenance and other touch-ups in the coming months.
