An ACT Government Website

You can help babies and children engage in active play in a range of places and settings.

This page is part of the Kids at Play Active Play program.

Different ways to active play

Active play can be structured or unstructured, indoors or out. Children can play alone or with others. Structured play has rules, time limits and equipment while unstructured play is more spontaneous. It can be as simple walking to the park or encouraging children to use their imaginations while playing.

Indoor play

Indoor play may have some space limitations, but there are still plenty of opportunities for active play. Make clever use of the space you have and think creatively about indoor active play.

Outdoor play

Outdoor play gives children all the room they need for activities like jumping, running and climbing. Being outdoors is also a great opportunity for children to get to know their environment and connect with nature. Don't forget to be sun-smart. Wear SPF30+ sunscreen, long-sleeved polo shirts, knee length shorts and wide-brimmed hats.

Out and about play

Try public places around you when you're out and about – shopping centre indoor play equipment, indoor play centres, local parks and playgrounds, bike paths, and nature reserves.

The Canberra region has so many great places to explore, and children need nature play to enrich movement, imagination and friendship. Take the chance to get out and make the most of our 'bush capital' through organisations near you, including:

  • Nature Play CBR - ideas and inspiration for exploring the outdoors in the ACT region
  • Meet & Move Facebook Group - supporting parents and carers of children up to 5 years to improve health and wellbeing through shared physical activity.
