An ACT Government Website

It’s crucial that physical activity is conducted safely so ensure risk of injury or accident is minimised. Consider equipment layout to avoid injuries and ensure there are no trip hazards, protruding objects or inappropriate surfacing.

This page is part of the Kids at Play Active Play program.

Make sure:

  • Children are engaged in tasks and activities that match their skills and abilities.
  • There is plenty of room for activities.
  • Adults supervise all activities and support children in managing risk associated with adventurous play.
  • Parents and carers are encouraged to dress their children in appropriate clothing and footwear.
  • The Cancer Council’s SunSmart guidelines are used during outdoor play.
  • Children are encouraged to drink plenty of water when they’re being active.

You should also ensure equipment is regularly maintained and checked for safety. You’ll find more information about the safety of playgrounds and equipment at Kids Safe NSW and Kids Health.

All fixed playground equipment should be appropriate for a child's age and ability and meet the current Australian Standards for Playgrounds.
