Canberra has the highest rate of EV ownership per capita in Australia.

12 May 2025

In Brief:

  • The ACT Government has hit its target of 180 public EV charging stations.
  • Canberra EV motorists can access over 250 individual charging bays across the ACT.
  • To keep up with rapid EV uptake, the ACT Government will continue to add charging stations.

The ACT Government has hit its target of 180 public EV charging stations by 2025, and even more are on the way to keep up with Canberra’s rapid EV uptake.

There are over 250 individual charging bays across the ACT. These are a mix of slower AC and faster DC chargers.

The ACT’s network of public chargers provides EV motorists quick top-up and longer-charge options.

Canberra has the highest rate of EV ownership per capita in Australia. In the ACT, EVs represent roughly one in five new vehicle sales in the ACT.

Using a public charging station

Using a public charging station is as simple as 'plug and play'.

Step 1: If the charger does not already have a cable attached, connect one end of your charging cable to the charging station.

Step 2: Connect the other end of the charging cable to the EV. Check the charger screen/display for information about payment and to start charging. Check indicator lights on your vehicle’s display to ensure it is charging.

Step 3: Once your EV is charged, disconnect all plugs. Leave the charger as you found it.

Step 4: You should vacate the charging bay as soon as your vehicle is charged. This means the charger can be used by the next person who needs it. Fines apply in the ACT for parking any vehicle (EV, petrol or other) in a charging bay if it is not actively charging.

Things to check when using a public charger

  • Charging speed –is it a slow or fast charger? Be aware of how long it will take to get the charge you need.
  • Cables – are they attached to the charger or will you need to bring your own?
  • plugs – is it compatible with your EV or cable?
  • The operator – do you have the relevant app or RFID card required for payment?
  • Charger access –is it restricted to certain times of the day or limited to a business’ customers or patrons?

For information on charger availability visit the operator’s website or app.
