Main construction on the new hospital is due to begin in 2027.
10 April 2026
In brief:
- A new hospital is being built in Canberra.
- Early works will start this month on the Northside Hospital Project.
The Northside Hospital Project is progressing, with early works starting this month.
These are essential site preparation activities that lay the foundation for main construction.
This will involve:
- establishing construction areas and site compounds
- upgrading and relocating existing services and utilities
- demolishing some existing buildings
- constructing new parking areas
- building a new childcare centre on-site.
A Development Application for the staged demolition of existing buildings on the northside hospital campus has also been lodged.
This is now available to view and is open for public comment until 24 April 2026.
Construction impacts
North Canberra Hospital will remain fully operational as the early works start north of Mary Potter Circuit.
There will be temporary changes to access, parking and wayfinding at various stages throughout the progression of early works.
These changes will be supported by clear signage and regular project updates.
Those travelling to North Canberra Hospital are encouraged to allow extra time during early works due to these changes.
The ACT Government will engage with staff, patients, campus partners and the local community throughout early works, and ongoing design consultation for the new hospital.
A new northside hospital for Canberra
The hospital is the largest single investment in a health infrastructure project in the ACT.
It will deliver more health care capacity in Canberra’s north, to ensure people receive care when they need it.
The hospital will feature:
- modern spaces designed to welcome patients and their families
- easy access to the emergency department for patients and ambulances
- shared spaces for medical practice, teaching, training and research.
