In brief:
- The ACT’s first Built to Rent to Buy project is now complete in Strathnairn.
- It will help single working women move from renting to owning a home over 10 years.
- The project supports the ACT’s plan to deliver more affordable housing.
The ACT’s first Build to Rent to Buy housing project has been completed.
Located in Strathnairn, it is called the Ginninderry Women’s Housing Initiative.
Ginninderry Women’s Housing Initiative was delivered by Community Housing Canberra with funding from the ACT Government.
The project features 22 high-quality townhouses. There is a mix of one-, two- and three-bedroom layouts.
A clearer path to home ownership
Women with low incomes are over‑represented among those needing social housing.
Ginninderry Women’s Housing Initiative is designed to help single working women whose incomes are low but secure.
Despite having stable employment, they have found it hard to enter the housing market.
The Build to Rent to Buy model supports them to move from renting to owning a home.
A long-term approach
Over a 10-year period, participants pay affordable rent on secure housing within Ginninderry Women’s Housing Initiative.
They are supported to move from renting to owning the home within this timeframe. The timing is based on their projected savings.
Increasing housing supply across Canberra
ACT Government funding, through the Affordable Housing Project Fund, helped make this new housing option possible.
It is part of a wider plan to increase housing supply across the ACT.
The ACT Government has committed to enabling 30,000 new homes by the end of 2030. This includes 5,000 more public, community and affordable rental homes.
The Affordable Housing Project Fund supports projects like this one, with a focus on helping people on lower incomes.
The ACT Government is continuing to work with community housing providers to deliver more affordable homes.
This includes releasing land and delivering programs to expand housing options.
