The 2026–27 ACT Budget includes funding for a major expansion of Belconnen Basketball Stadium.
The expansion will increase the number of indoor courts from four to seven and include a new convertible show court.
This will boost court capacity and access for training and competition, allowing more people take part in one of the city’s fastest-growing sports.
The redeveloped stadium will include:
- three new indoor courts
- a new convertible show court with seating for up to 1,800 people
- extra change rooms and toilets
- upgraded office spaces
- more car parking
- landscaping and new solar panels.
More space and improved facilities
The stadium will welcome new indoor courts, including a convertible show court. This will feature retractable seating for up to 1,800 spectators. It will also allow Canberra to host higher-level events and competitions, bringing more people to the ACT.
There will also be additional change rooms and toilet facilities for players, officials and spectators, along with extra car parking.
The installation of solar panels and batteries is also a key feature of the expansion.
The upgrades will cement Belconnen Basketball Stadium’s place as a modern home for the ACT basketball community.
A growing sport
Basketball is one of ACT’s most popular and fastest-growing sports. There are currently more than 14,000 registered participants across all ages and skill levels.
With the additional facilities, social and competitive teams will find it easier to locate a court for games and training.
The right infrastructure is essential for:
- developing players
- encouraging more people to take up the sport
- creating more opportunities for people to stay active.
Project timing
Planning will continue in the second half of this year.
Construction timelines will be confirmed as the project progresses through planning and procurement.
The project is being delivered in partnership with Basketball ACT to make sure it meets the needs of players, clubs and fans.
