Work is progressing to upgrade major roads across Canberra.

The ACT Government is working with the Australian Government on road infrastructure upgrades which aim to reduce congestion and improve travel times.

Main construction work is due to start on two major road duplication projects this year, including the duplication of Athllon Drive.

Athllon Drive

The Development Application for the Athllon Drive Duplication is now approved.

The Athllon Drive project is the duplication of 2.4km of the southern section in Tuggeranong, between Sulwood Drive and Drakeford Drive.

This upgrade aims to reduce road congestion between Woden and Tuggeranong.

Enabling works are complete, including:

• the widening and lighting of the community path between Atkins Street and Drakeford Drive
• new footpath connections
• upgrade of minor paths.

Utility enabling works are also complete.

A tender for main construction works will be issued in the coming months, with that work expected to start later this year.

William Hovell Drive

Main construction work will begin in coming months on the duplication of William Hovell Drive.

The ACT Government will duplicate 4.5km of William Hovell Drive from Drake-Brockman Drive to John Gorton Drive.

The duplication will improve safety, travel times and relieve congestion for road users.

Early planning is underway, including:

• surveying
• condition assessments
• setting up site compounds.

Monaro Highway

The Monaro Highway Upgrade aims to improve road safety. It will allow for faster travel for Tuggeranong, the Woden Valley and southern NSW.

The new eastern side of the new Dog Trap Creek Bridge is now complete.

Concrete has also been poured on a new flyover and interchange at the intersection of Lanyon Drive and the Monaro Highway in Hume.

This stage of the Monaro Highway Upgrade will be completed by the end of 2026.
