Visiting a library or Access Canberra service centre is now easier for those who are deaf or hard of hearing.
All Libraries ACT branches and Access Canberra service centres now offer a free on-demand Auslan interpreting service.
The service is called Convo Access. It connects deaf and hard-of-hearing people with instant video interpretation.
There’s no need to download an app and the service is completely free.
How to use Convo Access
Using Convo Access is straightforward.
- Scan a QR code with your own phone or device.
- Connect to a Convo Access interpreter. You do this via the free WiFi available at all libraries and service centres.
- Put your device between you and the customer service officer.
- Begin your conversation. It will be interpreted in real time.
Libraries ACT
All Libraries ACT branches are offering Convo Access as part of a 12-month trial.
The service aims to provide smoother, more effective communication between customers and library staff.
Convo Access expands on the array of free resources and initiatives offered to make library services more accessible. These include:
- the Home Library Service
- large print resources
- Easy Read resources
- multilingual resources, including Bilingual Story Time for young children
- onsite English conversation classes
- digital resources including online language-learning and literacy programs
- dedicated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander resources
- participation in the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program, which helps staff recognise and support people with non-visible disabilities
- community events and programs promoting social inclusion, and more.

Access Canberra service centres
Access Canberra has offered Convo Access at all service centres since early 2025.
On-the-spot interpretation makes it easier for deaf or hard of hearing customers to navigate government services and complete transactions.
Staff have also completed deaf awareness training to enhance the customer experience.
As with library branches, Access Canberra service centres already offer a number of accessible initiatives. These include:
- support for people with hidden disabilities
- support with different languages
- bookable appointments
- a quiet hour every Wednesday from 10 am to 11 am, offering a low-sensory experience.

- Dickson
- Gungahlin
- Tuggeranong
- Woden.
