The ACT Government has appointed Shaw Building Group to build the new Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) facility in Erindale.
About CAMHS
The Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) is for children and young people up to 18 years of age, who are experiencing moderate to severe mental health difficulties.
CAMHS operates five days a week and helps young people build confidence, develop skills and improve their daily lives.
Why a new building?
The new facility is part of the Northside Hospital Project.
Some health services currently located on the North Canberra Hospital campus in Bruce are moving to community locations.
Having a purpose-built CAMHS facility in a community location like Erindale will enable services to better meet the needs of patients and families.
The Erindale site also provides more space to support recovery and wellbeing.
About the new facility
Construction is expected to begin later this year. The new facility is scheduled to open in late 2027.
Its design is shaped by feedback from:
- staff
- young people
- families.
The larger site will include therapeutic indoor and outdoor areas. These will support high-quality care for young people and their families.
The new location will also offer easier access to public transport, more car parking and space to expand in the future.
Once the new facility is complete, it will provide the same range of youth mental health programs, including:
Current CAMHS services will continue to operate from their existing location until then, ensuring ongoing access to care.
The new facility complements a new Medicare Mental Health Kids Hub set to open in Tuggeranong in late 2026. This will deliver more free mental healthcare for young Canberrans.
