Federal Government funding will help boost affordable housing in the ACT

28 February 2025

In brief:

  • Seven local affordable housing projects will receive additional funding from the Federal Government.
  • The ACT Government also provides funding through the Affordable Housing Project Fund.
  • The projects will assist the ACT Government’s commitment to increase public, community and affordable rental housing.

Seven local housing projects will receive funding as part of the first round of the Housing Australia Future Fund Facility (HAFFF).

These projects include:

  • Marymead Catholic Care and Catholic Church (Curtin)
  • CHC Affordable Housing, Canberra PCYC, Snow Foundation (Turner)
  • Wesley, including MyHome (Curtin)
  • Assemble ‘Eden’ project (Belconnen)
  • CHC Affordable Housing blocks (Taylor)
  • YWCA off the plan (Belconnen)
  • Assemble Woden (Phillip).

These projects contribute to the ACT Government’s plan to increase affordable housing in Canberra.

The projects will deliver over 750 new homes. They contribute to the Government’s commitment to build 5,000 additional public, community and affordable rental dwellings by the end of 2030.

The Affordable Housing Project Fund

The ACT Government offers funding through the Affordable Housing Project Fund.

The Government is also releasing a pipeline of land to encourage affordable housing growth.

The Affordable Housing Project Fund aims to:

  • grow the supply of affordable rental properties in Canberra
  • strengthen the community housing sector.

Community housing providers and build-to-rent operators can apply for funding under this scheme. They are required to ensure:

  • at least 15 per cent of the development is provided as affordable rental
  • for a minimum of 15 years.

Housing providers may be able to access both types of funding. Many of the projects successful for HAFFF Round 1 funding are also supported through the Affordable Housing Project Fund.

The Housing Australia Future Fund Facility

The Housing Australia Future Fund Facility (HAFFF) is a Federal Government funding initiative administered by Housing Australia to support the delivery of 20,000 new social homes and 10,000 new affordable homes across Australia over a 5-year period, including housing to support acute housing needs.
