In brief:

  • Construction is underway on a new build-to-rent development in Belconnen.
  • The project includes 315 social and affordable homes for Canberrans.
  • The project has received ACT Government support.

Construction is underway on a new 420-home build-to-rent development in Belconnen.

The project will provide 315 social and affordable homes. These will be delivered through a mixed tenure, tenure blind model that supports inclusion and long-term housing stability.

Assemble and Housing Choices Australia will deliver the new affordable housing development.

The project has received funding from the Australian Government’s Housing Australia Future Fund (HAFF) program.

The ACT Government is also supporting the project with up to $5.6 million in lease variation charge support through the Affordable Housing Project Fund.

The Affordable Housing Project Fund

The ACT Government is investing in more affordable rental housing through the Affordable Housing Project Fund.

Affordable rental housing includes homes in the private rental market and the community housing sector. These homes are offered for rent at a discounted rate.

The Affordable Housing Project Fund aims to:

  • grow the supply of affordable rental properties in Canberra
  • strengthen the community housing sector.

The Fund’s pipeline will support more than 800 new affordable rental homes in Canberra.

What’s next?

The Belconnen project is now underway. It will be delivered by Bloc, a local developer-builder.

The project is expected to be completed in April 2028. It will provide much-needed long-term, affordable and social housing in a convenient location, close to transport and amenities.

This collaborative project forms part of the ACT’s goal to deliver 5,000 additional public, community and affordable rental homes by 2030.
