What the ACT Government is doing

More people are choosing Canberra as the place to live, work and raise a family. But as our city grows, so does the need for more housing – whether you’re renting, buying your first home, or looking for a safe and secure place to stay.

This means building more homes close to jobs and public transport, strengthening social and affordable housing, and shaping new communities that are sustainable, inclusive and connected.

To meet Canberrans’ housing needs at every stage of life, the ACT Government is enabling 30,000 more homes and delivering 5,000 additional public, community and affordable rental dwellings in Canberra by the end of 2030.

Building for a growing city

Canberra is growing, and housing needs to grow with it. The ACT Government is releasing land, partnering with the construction industry, and working with the Australian Government to deliver more homes and diverse housing options. Together, we’re making housing more affordable, accessible, and sustainable – so every Canberran can find a place to call home.

Building more homes

As demand for housing rises, we’re taking action to keep pace. This includes releasing land strategically, reforming planning processes, supporting apprentices and trainees in building trades, and partnering with developers and community housing providers to deliver new projects.

Through strong collaboration with industry and the Commonwealth under the National Housing Accord, we’re boosting supply and affordability – ensuring more homes for a growing Canberra.

Expanding housing options for every stage of life

The ACT Government is expanding diverse, accessible, and sustainable housing options – because every Canberran deserves a home that suits their lifestyle and budget.

Missing middle support

Canberra needs more diverse housing options – especially medium-density homes in established suburbs. We’re enabling well-designed, sustainable and affordable housing through demonstration projects and sustainable, accessible homes in new suburbs. This will give people more choice in where and how they live.
