Fuel supply in the ACT
Understand the current fuel supply situation in the ACT and what it means for you.
With global events impacting oil markets, we are seeing higher prices at the fuel pump and some localised pressure in parts of Australia.
This webpage will be updated regularly, providing the latest information and the actions taken by the Australian and ACT Governments to ensure fuel supply.
Current situation in the ACT
We know people are concerned, but the ACT continues to receive regular fuel deliveries through the national supply chain as per normal.
The ACT does not currently have plans to implement fuel rationing.
While the territory’s fuel supply remains secure, we recognise that Canberrans are experiencing the flow-on effects of higher fuel prices.
We’re working closely with fuel suppliers, industry and other stakeholders to monitor the situation and to keep fuel moving to where it is needed.
At times there may be some fuel types unavailable at certain service stations and longer wait times.
What you can do
With higher fuel prices, Canberrans may choose to reduce fuel use.
Now is the time to look out for each other. Using public or active transport, combining trips, car sharing, or driving more efficiently also helps save money.
Canberrans may also find it helpful to use existing flexible work arrangements where roles allow. This short‑term flexibility can help families manage care arrangements and ease fuel costs.
What the ACT Government is doing
The ACT Government is working with the Australian Government and other state and territory governments to increase fuel supply and reduce prices.
The Government will continue to assess the situation each week, and if conditions worsen because of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, further decisions will be announced.
Changes to public transport
The ACT Government has introduced cost of living support through a short-term reduction in monthly fare caps on public transport.
From Wednesday 8 April until Tuesday 30 June 2026, the maximum monthly cap for the number of paid trips on public transport will be halved.
Individual fares are not changing, but how many trips you pay for per month are.
Read about the monthly fare cap changes on the Transport Canberra website.
Making fuel supply and prices clearer
The ACT Government has strengthened its preparedness for fuel supply disruptions through amendments to the Fuels Rationing Act 2019.
The amended legislation enables the ACT Government to request up-to-date information from fuel companies about fuel supplies and deliveries. This will support faster decision-making during supply disruptions and help minimise impacts on the community.
The amendments also promote fairer, more transparent fuel pricing, making it easier for consumers to understand price charges particularly during periods of volatility.

What the Australian Government is doing
The Australian Government is working with all states and territories through a consistent approach.
A new National Fuel Security Plan has been established, endorsed by National Cabinet.
The National Plan has 4 levels. Level 1 is the lowest and level 4 requires the strongest action.
Australia is currently at level 2.
