CIT Yurauna is a learning centre tailored for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
Its sustainable, state-of-the-art facilities support learning, community connection and cultural safety.
The purpose-built centre offers courses and study support in:
- reading and writing
- maths
- communication.
CIT Yurauna also provides dedicated Indigenous-specific vocational training. This aims to help students build skills for future careers.
Students can also diversify into specific Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander cultural arts and history studies. Creative Indigenous writing is another option.
A range of Indigenous educational and student support services are also available.
A significant milestone
Yurauna is a Wiradjuri word that means ‘to grow’.
The centre’s official opening is an important step for inclusive education in Canberra.
It also demonstrates the ACT Government’s commitment to respecting and preserving culture.
Key features
The new centre has been tailored to meet the needs of its students and staff.
As well as general learning spaces, it features:
- an art room
- training rooms
- community and yarning spaces
- meeting spaces
- quiet rooms
- staff areas and more.
The centre’s design
The CIT Yurauna project was shaped through co-design workshops with CIT Yurauna and the Ngunnawal community. This helped ensure the space is welcoming and culturally appropriate.
The building is designed to fit in with the natural environment at CIT Bruce.
Construction was led by BYCC Alliance, a Supply Nation registered alliance between BY Group and Construction Control, focused on quality infrastructure and strong Indigenous social outcomes.
Special cultural design features include:
- open, light-filled spaces for learning and sharing stories
- natural materials and landscaped outdoor areas to reflect connection to country and community
- artworks and thoughtful design to reinforce cultural identity.
All this helps make the building feel safe, welcoming and respectful.
CIT Yurauna opened for Semester 1 this year. It is part of the wider CIT Woden Campus Project, which also delivered the new CIT Woden campus in July 2025.
