The final crane at the Canberra Hospital Expansion project site was recently disassembled piece by piece.
Named Lightning McCrane by a student from Garran Primary School, the tower crane played a crucial role in constructing the Critical Services Building, lifting materials and heavy machinery into place.
The two-day operation to fully dismantle the tower crane involved:
- Two mobile cranes set up with 27 associated crane and truck movements to site.
- The tower crane was dismantled over 11 lifts with the heaviest lift being 12.9 tonne.
- Over 30 workers were involved in the coordination of the dismantle works, including 22 specialist mobile crane operators and riggers.
The disassembly of the crane is just one of many complex and highly skilled jobs required to help progress Canberra’s new Critical Services Building towards completion. The below video provides a glimpse into the work done by the team to successfully and safely removed the crane with minimal disruption to the project site, hospital operations and the wider surrounding community.
In late July we also said farewell to the projects first crane Cranosaurus, which towered above the skyline of the Canberra Hospital Expansion for about a year and a half, playing a crucial role in constructing the Critical Services Building.
