Borrow disability equipment for children and young people

ACT therapists can borrow equipment to help children and young people with mobility, personal care, play, transport and communication.

You can borrow equipment for children and young people to trial at their school, childcare centre or family home.

This free service is called the Children and Young People Equipment Loan Service.

Equipment includes:

  • wheelchairs, strollers, walkers, standing frames and ramps
  • beds, hoists and transferring aids
  • toileting and bathing chairs
  • assistive technology devices and software.

Before borrowing equipment

You must register with us. We loan equipment to ACT clinicians, including speech pathologists, physiotherapists or occupational therapists.

To register, your employer must fill in the Clinician Registration form [PDF 99kB].

Check if your client can use the service

You can borrow equipment for a child or young person if they:

  • are under 17 years old
  • live in the ACT (for equipment used in the home)
  • go to an ACT school or childcare centre (for equipment used at school).

If the young person is over 16 years old

You can borrow equipment from ACT Equipment Loan Service – Canberra Health Services.

  • if you have questions about the equipment.

Loan times

You can borrow equipment to trial in:

  • your practice for 4 weeks
  • a family home for 3 months
  • a childcare or respite centre for 3 months
  • a school for up to one school term. It must be returned at the end of the term.

Borrowing equipment

Before we lend equipment:

  1. You must assess the child or young person to decide what equipment they need.
  2. You and your client must both sign the loan agreement forms.

Therapist's loan conditions and agreement

  3. Scan and email the form to CAYPELS@act.gov.au.

To use in a family’s home

  1. Ask your client to read the Client equipment loan conditions [PDF 176kB].
  2. Download and fill in the Client equipment loan agreement [PDF 169kb].
  3. Get your client to sign the loan agreement.
  4. Scan and email the loan agreement form to CAYPELS@act.gov.au.

To use in a school, childcare or respite centre

  1. Ask the school read the Client equipment loan conditions [PDF 176kB].
  2. Download and fill in the Education equipment loan agreement [PDF 157kB].
  3. Get the school principal or other responsible person to sign the loan agreement.
  4. Scan and email the form to CAYPELS@act.gov.au.

Getting the equipment

You must call us to make an appointment to pick up the equipment.

We can deliver equipment if it is large, heavy or urgent.

If families need equipment delivered, let us know on the equipment loan form.

Preparing family homes for large equipment

If a family borrows a bed or hoist, we will deliver it to their house and set it up in a room.

Before we deliver it, you must:

Using the equipment

Your client cannot use the equipment until you have:

  • set it up to suit their needs
  • shown them how to use it.

Repairs and cleaning

Contact us if:

  • you want information about cleaning the equipment
  • you think the equipment needs repairing.

Returning equipment

You or your client can return the equipment on or before the return due date.

You can:

  • Call us to book a time to drop the equipment back.
  • Collect the equipment from your client at their next appointment.

For heavy or large equipment, contact us to arrange a collection time.
