An ACT Government Website

If you work or volunteer with vulnerable people you must have a background check under the Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act 2001.

A working with vulnerable people check aims to reduce the risk of the harm or neglect to vulnerable people.

A person's past behaviour can provide an indication of possible future behaviour. Examples or patterns of abuse or inappropriate behaviour can sometimes to evidence in information that is assessed, which can include your criminal record.

How to apply

To apply, go Access Canberra to complete the online application.

If you can't apply online, contact Access Canberra for help with other options.

Access Canberra will conduct a thorough risk assessment of your conviction and non-conviction history, and any other information to the background screening.

Based on the risk assessment you may be issued with a registration card with a unique identifying registration number that is valid for up to 5 years.

You must carry the card at all times when doing regulated activity as you may be asked to show your registration.

If you hold current registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra) you do not need to apply for an ACT working with vulnerable people check.

Interstate students

If you hold a current working with vulnerable people card or equivalent and a clear National Police Check (NPC) you are not required to apply for an ACT working with vulnerable people card.

For questions about other equivalent checks from other Australian states and territories, email CPO@act.gov.au
