Lower costs for employment agents
Changes to licensing requirements for employment agents in the ACT aims to help businesses operate at a lower cost.
About the reform
As of July 1 2024, the Housing and Consumer Affairs Legislation Amendment Act 2024 removed the requirement for employment agents in the ACT to hold a licence.
These changes mean employment agents are:
- no longer required to hold a licence to operate in the ACT
- still prohibited from accepting a fee or reward from individuals seeking employment.
Why it’s important
The ACT Government collaborated with business in 2021 to develop Better Regulation: A report on how we are improving business regulation in the ACT. This process identified the need for a review of employment agent licensing in the ACT.
This is a de-regulation measure that reduces costs for businesses in this low-risk industry. Job seekers are still protected from being charged fees for employment agent services.
Next steps
We will continue to work with businesses, industry and the community to identify further opportunities for regulatory reform.
