Funding: $1.8 Million for design and construction

The Stromlo to Cotter Mountain Bike Trail is a new 15km trail that will link two popular recreation areas and showcase the unique ACT landscape.

It has been funded following community feedback from the Canberra Mountain Bike Report and Dirt Art have been engaged to complete the design and planning approvals.

The trail will:

  • start as a descending technical trail through the University of Canberra Stromlo Forest Park. It will then turn into an 'all mountain' style trail through hills and rocky terrain.
  • offer views of the Murrumbidgee River and surrounding cultural landscape.
  • suit intermediate riders and include technical climbs and features.
  • include options for short and long loops for riders and a shared use dual direction trail for walkers and runners.
  • avoid sensitive ecological and cultural areas identified in detailed surveys.
  • where impacts are unavoidable, sensitive trail design will deliver low impact solutions.

Construction is anticipated to commence in late 2025 and the project is due to be completed by 2027.

Community engagement

In 2019, we asked the community for feedback on mountain biking in Canberra. This feedback helped create the Canberra Mountain Bike Report, which included ideas for making mountain biking better for both locals and visitors. Workshops and public comments also contributed to the report.

Along with the Canberra Mountain Bike Report, a Draft Trail Development Plan was developed. This plan includes proposed trails in the ACT, with a focus on the Stromlo to Cotter trail as a priority.
