Elective surgery waiting list performance
This page provides information on how long patients are waiting for elective surgery and whether they are receiving their surgery according to clinically recommended timeframes.
Data highlights
Elective surgeries performed within clinically recommended timeframes
Patients waiting for elective surgery may experience waiting times before they are admitted to hospital to receive their surgery. Waiting times depend on the demand for surgery, hospital resourcing and the urgency category assigned to the patient.
Median waiting time to surgery
The median waiting time refers to the time within which half of the patients were admitted for their surgery. Half of the patients had a shorter waiting time, and half had a longer waiting time.
Data on elective surgery waiting times is captured after the surgery is performed, so does not reflect the status of people currently waiting for surgery.
Patients waiting for elective surgery
Throughout the year a census (or snapshot) of patients on ACT public hospital elective surgery waiting list (ESWL) is taken. Patients on the ESWL include those who are either ‘ready for surgery’ or who are ‘not ready for surgery’ due to health or personal reasons.
Patients overdue for elective surgery
Patients on the ACT public ESWL on the census date who were ready for care and have waited longer than the clinically recommended timeframe for their urgency category are referred to as ‘overdue’.
