An ACT Government Website

The ACT Heritage Council manages the ACT Heritage Register.

Before a place or object is listed on the Register, it must first be assessed against the heritage significance criteria. If it meets one or more of the criteria, it is granted provisional registration while the Council completes the assessment process.

Provisional registration gives the community time to share their feedback on the nomination.

Timeframes

Provisional registration usually lasts for:

  • 9 months for a precinct
  • 5 months for other cases.

These timeframes can be extended under the Heritage Act 2004.

This makes sure there's enough time to:

  • get feedback from the community
  • allow the Council to review the feedback
  • make changes to their assessment as a result
  • report to the Minister for Heritage about the consultation and what effect it has had

Consultation

The consultation period is usually 4 weeks.

The Council will publish the nomination outcome within 5 days of their decision on the ACT Legislation Register. They will also contact interested community members after their decision.

Current provisional registration listings

There are no provisional registrations currently open for consultation.
