Parks and Conservation Fire
ACT Parks and Conservation Service (ACT PCS) staff take on firefighting roles as part of their job. ACT PCS also provides the ACT Emergency Services Agency with specialist firefighting staff. This includes:
- senior incident managers
- incident controllers
- remote area fire teams
- aerial specialists
- GIS technicians
- fire tower operators
- plant managers
- advanced chainsaw operators
- bushfire behaviour analysts
- burnt area recovery specialists.
Seasonal work programs
Each year, the ACT PCS Fire Management Unit hires temporary staff to help the seasonal fire crews to protect Canberra and its natural environment.
These crews go through an induction into the fire management program and receive various training. Training includes:
- basic fire training
- 4WD operation
- chainsaw use.
While they have a wide range of duties, their main job is to prevent bushfire. This includes:
- removing vegetation preparing areas for controlled burns
- assessing fuel hazards
- operating fire towers
- maintaining fire trails.
They also work in urban areas of Canberra to support mowing and grazing of fire-prone zones.
Seasonal fire crews help carry out the prescribed burn program and boost ACT PCS's firefighting capacity. They gain valuable skills, qualifications, and hands-on experience, which often help them secure permanent jobs with ACT PCS or other land management agencies in Australia.
When available, these positions are advertised on the ACT Government Careers and Employment website.
