The Research and Innovation Fund supports world-leading health research in the ACT.

Fellowship program

The fund's fellowship program supports early-mid-year career researchers employed in the ACT Health system. The ACT Government made $1 million available through the program in 2022–23.

The fund is guided by the research strategic plan. It invests in people to build research capability, make high value contributions to improving the health and healthcare of the people served by the ACT health system. The program encourages collaboration, leadership and capacity building in the ACT’s health and medical research ecosystem.

Successful applicants

The successful applicants for the fellowship are:

  • Dr Michael Chapman from Canberra Health Services for his project: Dying, death literacy and Voluntary Assisted Dying – Educating community responses to assisted dying in the ACT.
  • Dr Nathan D’Cunha from University of Canberra for his project: Delivering timely post-diagnostic dementia care in the ACT region: Identifying current gaps and enhancing service delivery.
  • Dr Philip Choi from Canberra Health Services and Australian National University for his project: Unravelling immune thrombocytopenia: from diagnosis to treatment options.
  • Associate Professor Katrina Randall from Canberra Health Services and Australian National University for her project: Improving outcomes for patients with allergy and immunodeficiency in the ACT using a phenomics and genomics-based approach.
  • Ms Melissa Parker, Canberra Health Services, for her project: Investigating the impact of PIPPA (Period ImPact and Pain Assessment) screening for period pain in online communities and primary health.

Previously funded projects

In 2020–21 the fund awarded $2 million to nine successful projects, including up to $600,000 to support the Australian Brain Cancer Mission.
