Summary

Occupational violence (OV) is any action, incident or behaviour which causes a person to be assaulted, threatened, harmed, or injured during, or as a direct result of their work. The workplace also includes remote, community or home-based sites.

Occupational violence may also include intimidation, verbal abuse, sexual harassment, threatening behaviour, and abuse through technology (text, emails, and phone calls).

The Nurses and Midwives: Towards a Safer Culture – The Next Steps Strategy follows “The First Step” strategy which was established to support the fundamental rights of nurses and midwives working in ACT public health services to feel safe and protected in their workplaces.

Vision and goals for the strategy

The Next Steps strategy aims to create a healthier and safer environment by completing the 12 priority actions identified during the evaluation of The First Step strategy. These actions aim to reduce occupational violence and establish a positive safety culture throughout ACT public health services.
