Citizenship ceremonies in the ACT

You'll become an Australian citizen at a citizenship ceremony. Learn when you'll get an invitation and what happens at the ceremony.

Your invitation

You will be invited to a citizenship ceremony 3 to 6 months after your application for citizenship is approved.

Attending your citizenship ceremony is the last step to become an Australian citizen.

You will get an invitation by email or post about 2 to 3 weeks before the ceremony. The invitation will include:

  • date and venue for your ceremony
  • what time you should arrive
  • how many guests you can bring
  • documents you must bring with you.

If you cannot attend

If you cannot attend your citizenship ceremony, you can contact the Office for Multicultural Affairs.

The Department of Home Affairs will contact you with a new date for your ceremony.

You may have to wait a few months before we send you another invitation.

At your ceremony

During the ceremony

The ceremony lasts from 60 to 90 minutes.

You will make the Australian citizenship pledge of commitment with other people becoming citizens.

After the pledge, you’ll be presented with your Australian citizenship certificate.

You can also get a free digital photograph taken at the ceremony to remember this special occasion.

Your citizenship certificate

Your citizenship certificate is an important legal document. You will need it when you apply for an Australian passport.

If your Citizenship Certificate has mistakes, contact the Department of Home Affairs.
