To hold a radiation licence for medical diagnostic and therapeutic use of radiation, you need to register with the appropriate health professional board such as the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

There are also specific safety prerequisites for radiation licences in the medical field.

They are listed in the table below.

  • Training, knowledge and or experience in radiation safety with respect to bone mineral density apparatus.
ChiropractorsChiropractic general X-ray unit
  • Must be registered as a chiropractor with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  • Training, knowledge and or experience in the safe use of x-ray apparatus for the chiropractic examinations.
DermatologistsSuperficial orthovoltage radiotherapy X-ray unit
  • Must be registered as a medical practitioner with a specialty in dermatology with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  • Training, knowledge and or experience in the safe use of superficial orthovoltage x-ray unit.
Nuclear medicine specialistsUnsealed radioactive material used in nuclear medicine
  • Must be registered as a specialist nuclear medicine physician with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  • Must have successfully undertaken advanced training in nuclear medicine as overseen by the Joint Specialist Advisory Committee in Nuclear Medicine (JSAC).

Medical diagnostic imaging units
  • Must be registered as a medical practitioner with a specialty in radiology with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  • Must have successfully undertaken advanced training in nuclear medicine as overseen by the Joint Specialist Advisory Committee in Nuclear Medicine (JSAC).
Nuclear medicine technologistsUnsealed radioactive material used in nuclear medicine
  • Must be registered as a nuclear medicine technologist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
Computed tomography (CT) scanner used for nuclear medicine technology including SPECT/CT PET.
  • Must be registered as a nuclear medicine technologist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
  • Training, knowledge and or experience in the use of diagnostic CT for nuclear medicine.
Computed tomography (CT)
scanner used for diagnostic radiography and nuclear medicine technology.
  • Must be registered as a nuclear medicine technologist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
  • Training, knowledge and or experience in the use of diagnostic CT.
OphthalmologistsOphthalmic strontium 90 applicator
  • Must be registered as a medical practitioner with a specialty in ophthalmology with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  • Training, knowledge and or experience in the safe use of Sr-90 applicators.
PathologistsBlood Irradiator
  • Must have successfully completed in-house training in the use of blood irradiation equipment.
Radiation oncologistsMedical therapeutic radiation sources
  • Must be registered as a medical practitioner with a specialty in radiation oncology with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
Radiation therapistsMedical therapeutic radiation sources
  • Must be registered as a radiation therapist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
RadiographersMedical diagnostic imaging units
  • Must be registered as a as a diagnostic radiographer with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
RadiologistsMedical diagnostic imaging units
  • Must be registered as a medical practitioner with a specialty in radiology with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
Medical specialists including cardiologist, vascular surgeon, orthopaedic surgeon, urologistMedical fluoroscopic X-ray unit
  • Must be registered as a medical specialist with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  • Training, knowledge and or experience in radiation safety with respect to fluoroscopic X-ray equipment.
