Change or add to your public housing home

Check the types of changes you can make and apply for permission from Housing ACT.

You must get permission from Housing ACT to change or add to your home.

You’ll usually have to:

  • pay for the changes
  • return your home to its original condition when you move out.

If you need changes to help you live more independently (called disability modifications), we will:

  • assess your situation
  • make the changes needed and pay for the cost.

Changes you can make

The changes you can make depend on the type of property you have. Some changes might not be possible in an apartment.

Changes you can make include:

  • painting the inside walls
  • putting up pictures or shelves.

You can also install:

  • air conditioning
  • a dishwasher
  • Foxtel
  • a garage or pergola.

Changes to the structure of the home

You must get a qualified tradesperson or a licensed builder for electrical and plumbing work.

The work must meet Housing ACT property standards [PDF 339kB].
