Applying for an ACT public school teaching role

How to apply for a teaching job in the ACT public school system.

Our permanent, temporary, and casual classroom teaching positions are advertised on the Jobs ACT website.

For general information on the ACT Government hiring process, see How we hire.

Here’s some information about the process of applying for a teaching job in the ACT.

How to apply

If you want to apply for a teaching role with the ACT Education Directorate, you can do this using our online application. This is for all teaching positions including:

  • permanent
  • temporary
  • casual.

Pre-screening questions

As part of your job application, you will be asked to complete several pre-screening questions. This is so your eligibility can be assessed. You will need to provide your:

  • resume/CV
  • ACT Teacher Quality Institute (TQI) registration or, if currently studying, your enrolment in an accredited initial teacher education course
  • current ACT Working with Vulnerable People (WwVP) registration.

If you do not hold a teacher registration with the ACT TQI or a valid ACT WwVP, we suggest you apply for this at the same time you apply for a teaching opportunity.

To find out more, see ACT teacher qualification checks.

Permanent and temporary classroom teacher applicants

Once you’ve answered your pre-screening questions, you’ll progress to the next step. Here you will be asked to:

If you’re an international teacher applicant, it is beneficial to provide evidence of your AITSL Skills Assessment. If you are also from a non-English speaking country you will need to complete the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) assessment. For more information about the migration process, see the ‘Teachers migrating from overseas’ section on Your career with ACT education.

Selection process

Applicants will be assessed by a Joint Selection Committee (JSC) through a merit selection process, which includes:

  • assessing the written application
  • assessing the supporting documentation
  • an interview
  • referee reports.

Following the assessment process, applicants will be provided an outcome. Based on the outcome, and the needs of individual schools, applicants can be offered either a permanent or temporary position.

Casual classroom teacher applicants

The next steps for casual teaching roles are:

  • submit a statement of claims (maximum 2 pages) using the ‘Casual Teacher Assessment Criteria Form’ provided in the job advertisement
  • provide a minimum of one completed ‘Referee Report Form’ (find in the job advertisement) from your current or most recent supervisor. If you can provide 2 referees, this is preferred.

Selection process

Casual applications may be assessed on application and referee reports only.

Following the assessment process, applicants will be provided an outcome. Based on the outcome, suitable applicants will be employed on a casual basis by the Directorate.

Recognition of prior service

If you are offered a teaching role with the ACT Education Directorate, recognition of previous periods of service with specified organisations may contribute to the determination of salary increment and/or leave entitlements.

There are 2 processes for recognition of prior service:

  • Recognition of prior service for teacher salary increment – this process is managed by the Directorate.
  • Recognition of prior service for leave entitlements (long service leave and personal leave) – this process is managed by the ACT Public Service Shared Services Centre.

To find out more, see the Prior Service Recognition Portal on the ACTPS Employment Portal.
