Education careers for non-teaching staff
Find out about the range of non-teaching roles we offer in the ACT Education Directorate.
Our workforce includes a range of non-teaching roles that support the management and day-to-day operations of our 92 public schools.
Health professionals and youth workers
As a health professional or youth worker, you can make a difference to students having trouble with accessing and engaging in their education.
We employ:
- allied health assistants
- occupational therapists
- physiotherapists
- psychologists
- speech language pathologists
- social workers
- youth workers.
One area that employs health professionals is our Clinical Practice team which includes the:
- School Psychology Service
- Allied Health Service
- Wellbeing in Schools team.
In ACT public schools, Youth Workers are employed as Youth Support Workers or Wellbeing Support Workers.

Administrative services officers
School administrative officer duties may include any of the following:
- collecting financial payments
- supervising clerical and support staff
- coordinating repairs and maintenance of school property
- talking to parents and carers and school related bodies
- supporting the principal and school leaders with administrative tasks.
A knowledge of financial systems and procedures is an advantage for administrative officer roles.
School assistants
School assistants play a vital role in the operations of our schools. They support the achievement of high-quality outcomes for all students in ACT public schools.
There are 24 different roles available across 5 key areas:
- administration and operations
- identified positions
- learning support
- student services and welfare
- technical services.
School assistants can be employed in permanent, temporary or casual roles.
School cleaners
Our School Cleaning Service team employs cleaners to make sure our public schools are clean and safe learning and working environments for students and staff.
All members of the School Cleaning Service in the Education Directorate are ACT Government employees.
Providing proof of WWVP registration and other documents
To work in an ACT public school you will need to provide proof of a current Working with Vulnerable People registration and certified documents to verify your identity. Without these documents, you cannot work in a school.
Some roles will require evidence of current professional registration. If this is required, this information will be outlined in the role description.
