Involving and informing the community
Our commitment to you
Major Projects Canberra is committed to engaging with a range of stakeholders, including the wider community, and using your feedback to help shape our project. A Communication and Engagement Strategy has been developed to outline how we can best work with our stakeholders and the community across all stages of the project.
Our engagement is guided by the following principles:
- We provide meaningful engagement where the community has clear, relevant and timely information to help shape decisions or consider impacts.
- We are accountable when we engage, and we give the community feedback to help build an understanding of how they are contributing to the project.
- We are responsive to the community, seeking to grow strong relationships for future collaboration and cooperation.
- We are inclusive and respectful when we engage, finding ways to ensure engagement is equitable and fun.
Our priority is to make sure you’re kept up to date with what’s happening in the lead up to construction, as well as throughout the duration of the project. We want to make sure everyone in the project area is aware of what we’re doing, why and what disruption our works may cause.
We record all feedback and interactions with community members in our stakeholder management database, allowing us to collate your ideas and concerns, protect your private information, and make sure we can respond to every enquiry in a timely and satisfactory way.
We are committed to transparent and meaningful engagement, ensuring you know what your feedback can influence.

How we’ve engaged
Community consultation is an important element of project development and captures your voice as the project progresses. Since 2019, the ACT Government’s light rail project team have engaged with the community in several areas including to provide project updates, seek feedback to inform design development and support planning and environmental approvals.
Some of the ways in which we’ve engaged stakeholders and the community include:
- Formation of a Community Reference Group to provide a forum for discussion and feedback from representatives of the community and stakeholder groups.
- Establishment of a dedicated hotline and email inbox to receive feedback and respond to enquiries.
- Establishment of a dedicated project website and ACT Government YourSay page.
- Utilisation of digital platforms and tools, including a virtual engagement room, interactive map and virtual flythrough.
- Provision of printed collateral, including signage and fact sheets.
- Delivery of project updates through printed and electronic distribution lists.
- Delivery of in-person engagement opportunities, including pop-up engagement stalls, community information sessions, one-on-one briefings and door knocking
- Coordination of virtual ‘door knocking’ and one-on-one information sessions.
How you’ve helped shape project outcomes
CommunicationIn 2020, we adjusted our communication and engagement activities to address community questions around what the benefits and impacts of raising London Circuit might be. This led to the team adding more information sessions, stakeholder briefings, letterbox drops, flyers, and project updates to ensure the community had better access to information. | EnvironmentWe’ve heard from the community about the environmental impact of construction including potential impacts related to noise, dust, and vibration. Through the Environmental Assessment process for raising London Circuit, community members were invited to provide submissions and share their concerns. This feedback was incorporated into the final Environmental Assessment which can be viewed online here. |
Community ConnectivityWe understand the community are interested in multi-modal transport connections and ensuring they are accessible during construction and in the final project design. We’ve heard from community members through our interactive map, inbox and engagement sessions and will continue to provide available and accessible information about transport options as the project progresses. | ConstructionTraffic has frequently been raised as a concern during construction. This includes the potential for changed traffic conditions, delays, potential road closures and loss of car parking. We recognise that construction of light rail from the City to Woden will cause disruption, and the ACT Government has established a Disruption Taskforce to consider opportunities to minimise disruption and keep the community informed over the coming years. |
