Inclusive Communication Guide
Summary
The Inclusive Communication Guide has been developed by the ACT Government. It aligns with a commitment of the Capital of Equality Strategy (2024-29) to promote the use of inclusive language across the ACT public service (ACTPS).
This guide supports the ACTPS in meeting their human rights obligations by encouraging equitable and inclusive communication practices.
It provides guidance on:
- the use of gender-neutral language (where possible)
- culturally sensitive approaches to inclusive communications
- the use of pronouns
- the use of LGBTIQA+ flags.
The guide can also be used by non-government organisations (NGOs), corporates and anyone else needing inclusive communication guidance.
How to use the guide
This guide can be used for the development of:
- written communications (for example, when writing a policy document or an event advertisement)
- verbal communications (for example, when addressing someone or a group of people)
- and visual communications (for example, when using LGBTIQA+ flags).
It provides helpful ‘use and avoid’ examples throughout.
There is also a short version available.
