Affordable housing for over 65s

Pensioners who rent in the ACT can apply for an affordable property to rent from Housing ACT.

We have properties in Bonython, Chapman, Florey, Kambah, and Rivett. When you apply you can nominate your preferred suburb.

If you meet our age, income and asset test limits you can apply and we'll place you on a waiting list.

When a property becomes available, we will offer it to the person who has been on the waitlist the longest. If they do not accept the property it will go to the next person on the list.

Check whether you can get an affordable rental

To apply for affordable housing you must:

• be an Australian citizen, or permanent resident currently renting a property in the ACT
• be 65 or older or within 5 years of age-pension age
• be within 10 years of age-pension age if you're Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander
• have no rental arrears or legal action pending about tenancy matters
• have evidence you're able to pay rent, look after the property and live independently
• meet the Commonwealth Age Pension Income and Assets eligibility test and qualify for the age pension or have income less than average weekly earnings in the ACT.

How to apply

1. Download and fill in the Affordable Rental Office Application Form [PDF 551.3 kB].
2. Include proof of all assets currently owned by all the named applicants.
3. Submit the form to us by email, post or in person.

If your application is approved

When a property becomes available, we offer it to a small number of eligible applicants.

We give it to the first applicant who accepts the offer.

You may decline 2 offers. If you decline a third offer, we will remove you from the waiting list.
