Buses to replace light rail services – 31 October to 1 November

All light rail services will be replaced by buses to allow for works to extend light rail from the city to Commonwealth Park.

  • From Saturday 31 October to Sunday 1 November, rail replacement buses operate between Alinga Street and Gungahlin Place in both directions.
  • Regular services resume Monday 2 November.
  • View replacement bus timetable and stop locations on the Transport Canberra website.

Cyclist wayfinding map

Cyclist detours are in place in the city centre while construction is underway. Plan your cycling through the city and the Commonwealth Avenue corridor using the Cyclist Wayfinding Map.

Please note there may be additional congestion on cycle paths near Commonwealth Park due to Floriade.

The map shows alternative and recommended routes during temporary closures linked to construction works in the area.

City

Projects impacting this area:

Commonwealth Avenue

  • Walking and cycling paths have changed and may be closed to allow works to be carried out safely. A cyclist detour is in place while construction is underway. View map.
  • Northbound (Acton Waterfront) bus stop is closed until further notice.
  • Bus services to and from the city may be delayed due to lane closures and light rail works.

Edinburgh Avenue

  • From Thursday 24 September, traffic on Edinburgh Avenue will be one lane in each direction between The Mews and Knowles Place. View Map.

London Circuit

  • Western side closed between Northbourne Avenue and Commonwealth Avenue.
  • East side sections closed between Northbourne Avenue and Theatre Lane.
  • Pedestrian and wheelchair access maintained around London Circuit.
  • Shared paths remain open but reduce speed near works.
  • From 28 May: the London Circuit pedestrian crossing at the southern end of Knowles Place will be closed. Pedestrians will be directed to use the London Circuit pedestrian crossings at the northern end of Knowles Place (in front of the Reserve Bank of Australia building) or at Edinburgh Ave. View map.
  • From 13 July: temporary lane closures will be in place on London Circuit between Baileys Arcade and Ainslie Place for up to three months.
  • From 7 October until December 2026, the existing thoroughfare from West Row to Knowles Place will be closed. Access to Knowles Place and the Knowles Place carpark will be via Edinburgh Avenue during these works. Access to Odgers Lane from West Row/London Circuit will stay open. View map.
  • Theatre Lane: (behind Canberra Theatre Centre) access restricted and closed to public access during lyric theatre works.

Northbourne Avenue/Alinga Street

  • Turning right from Northbourne Avenue to Alinga Street is not permitted.
  • Local vehicles (e.g. delivery vehicles, taxis) travelling on Alinga Street east must turn left onto Northbourne Avenue.
  • Vehicles are not permitted to travel through the Alinga Street/Northbourne Avenue intersection to Alinga Street west.
  • Northbourne Avenue temporary lane reductions between Alinga Street and Vernon Circle. One lane of traffic will remain open in each direction.
  • From 8 pm Friday 16 October to 6 am Monday 19 October and 8 pm Friday 23 October to 6 am Monday 26 October: Northbourne Avenue will be closed in both directions between Vernon Circle and Cooyong Street/Barry Drive. Detours will be in place. View map.
    • Pedestrian crossings at the Northbourne Avenue/London Circuit intersection will be closed during these works. Pedestrians will be directed to cross Northbourne Avenue at Alinga Street. View map.
  • From 8 pm Friday 30 October to 6 am Monday 2 November: The pedestrian crossings across Northbourne Avenue on the southern end of Alinga Street light rail stop median area will be temporarily closed. Pedestrians, including users of the City bus interchange, will be directed to cross at the Rudd/Bunda Street intersection to the north, or London Circuit to the south. View map.
  • From 1 am to 5 am, Sunday 1 November: Northbourne Avenue will be closed southbound between Bunda Street and Alinga Street. View map.

  • From Monday 29 June, no pedestrian access at the William Hovell Drive, Drake-Brockman Drive and Kingsford Smith Drive roundabout.
  • Pedestrian detours in place to Belconnen Way, Kingsford Smith Drive, Murranji Street and Florina Place.

Monaro Highway

  • Pavement construction continues across the work area.
  • Temporary traffic lights are in place for northbound traffic at the Monaro Highway and Lanyon Drive intersection.
  • During weekday off-peak hours, traffic on the Monaro Highway may reduce to one lane in each direction.

Woden, Weston Creek and Molonglo

Projects impacting this area:

Coppins Crossing Road

  • Saturday 3 October and Sunday 4 October 2026 have been set aside as contingency days and will only be used if weather or other unforeseen conditions delay the works.

Parking

Theatre Lane car park
  • Parking area opposite Sydney building is closed.
  • Accessible parking, share car spaces, and designated Legislative Assembly, medical, and government vehicles have been relocated to City Hill and Hobart Place car parks.

City parking

There are more than 10,000 car parks in the Canberra’s city centre. This includes covered and uncovered parking, in addition to accessible parking spaces. If you decide to travel to the city by car, a map of available car parks is below.

A number of private sector projects are also currently underway in the city. Please follow signage in place, allow for additional travel time and plan ahead.
