ACT Emergency Medal

Find out how to nominate for the ACT Emergency Medal. This award is for service during a declared emergency event in the ACT.

The ACT Emergency Medal is presented to people who meet the criteria for declared emergency events in the ACT.

You must meet the minimum length of service for the emergency event:

  • in one or more of the listed locations
  • during the listed dates.

The presentation of the ACT Emergency Medal is arranged by the main service organisation.

Who you can nominate

You can nominate individuals.

Their service can be paid or voluntary. They must have served in direct response to a declared emergency.

If you've received the ACT Emergency Medal in the past, you can still apply.

If you've lost your medal, you can contact us for a replacement.

Award categories

There are 2 types of service that are recognised.

Sustained Service

This award recognises people who served for 5 days or more during a declared emergency.

You must:

  • have served in direct response to the declared emergency
  • have served for 5 days (for 4 or more hours per day) – days served do not need to be consecutive and may include up to 2 days of travel.
  • provide evidence of your service in protection of lives and the property of others.

During the 2003 Canberra bushfires:

  • your service must have included suppression of bushfires or evacuation and protection of the ACT community
  • you must have served for 8 hours or more.

Significant Service

This award recognises people who gave extraordinary service during a declared emergency.

You must:

  • have served in direct response to the declared emergency
  • have served in an extraordinary way
  • provide evidence of your service in protection of lives and the property of others.
