Secondary student exchange

Learn about the student exchange program for secondary school students and find a list of registered student exchange organisations.

The secondary student exchange program allows:

  • Australian secondary students to study overseas
  • overseas secondary students to study in Australia.

The exchange is for:

  • no less than 3 months or one school term
  • no more than 12 months.

Young people must be aged 15 to 18 years old when they arrive in Australia.

How to apply

Contact a secondary exchange organisation

Choose from the list of registered secondary exchange organisations. Your family must work with a registered organisation to organise the exchange.

The organisation will help you find a school and host family. They charge a fee for their services.

Help complete the request form

With your help, the registered secondary exchange organisation will fill out the Acceptance Advice for Secondary Exchange Student (AASES) request form [PDF 108 kB].

Wait for your Acceptance Advice

Wait to receive the AASES document from your secondary exchange organisation.

Apply for a student visa

Apply for a subclass 500 student visa (schools sector) through Australia's Department of Home Affairs.

Get confirmation of your exchange

Once you have your visa, the secondary exchange organisation confirms your exchange.
