About the ACT Governments CCTV network and how to request footage.

The ACT Government operates over 3,000 Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras across the ACT.

The operation of all ACT government CCTV is governed by the CCTV Policy [PDF 395KB].

CCTV locations

CCTV cameras are installed in public open spaces and in ACT Government buildings, assets and facilities.

What CCTV footage is used for

CCTV footage provides support for:

  • crime deterrence, investigation and prosecution
  • asset monitoring and security
  • public safety and event monitoring
  • process control and business monitoring
  • the response and management of emergency
  • training, engagement and community engagement
  • traffic, vehicle and parking enforcement.​​​​​​​

Who can access to CCTV footage

Access to and the use of CCTV footage is strictly controlled.

ACT policing has access to live and recorded footage from some of the cameras to support public safety. ​​​​​​​The ACT Government also uses CCTV to support event management, service delivery operations and incident management.

CCTV footage is generally deleted after 30 days, if not used to support the investigation of crime.

How to request CCTV footage

The disclosure of CCTV footage is subject to the Freedom of Information Act 2016 and the Information Privacy Act 2014.

Access Canberra will send your request to the relevant CCTV system owner. The CCTV owner will review your request and decide if, and how, they can release the information to you.
