An ACT Government Website

Keeping track of Matters of Matters of National Environmental Significance (MNES) helps us see if our management goals are being met. It also helps us know if we need to change how we manage things.

The ACT Parks and Conservation Service has set up a large and regular monitoring program for MNES and related values across all offset sites. This program:

  • Measures changes in the condition of MNES.
  • Helps us understand the status of MNES animals in these areas.
  • Informs our management strategies.

Currently, the ACT Parks and Conservation Service monitors 450 permanent points each year. They check various ecological values, which helps us understand population trends and how well our management is working.

The ACT Environmental Offsets Policy provides guidelines to protect important natural areas and resources. It aims to avoid damaging places important for conservation. Ensuring that if we lose any ecological areas or habitats, we replace them with similar benefits elsewhere.
