Summary

In 2018, the Office for LGBTIQA+ Affairs started a project to record the history of Canberra’s queer community. The result was the ACTing OUT book, written by Graham Willett, which explores the often overlooked history of LGBTIQA+ people in our region.

The book highlights key moments, such as:

  • the founding of the Homosexual Law Reform Society in 1969
  • major law reforms over the years
  • the marriage equality postal survey and its impact.

It celebrates the achievements and resilience of Canberra’s LGBTIQA+ community, while also recognising the ongoing challenges they face.

The book discusses how Canberra has played a key role in LGBTIQA+ activism, both nationally and locally.

Discover Canberra’s rich queer history through ACTing OUT and learn about the events, reforms, and activism that have shaped the community today.
