Funding: $317 million for main construction works
The ACT Government is planning to upgrade the Canberra Theatre Centre with a new lyric theatre.
Current updates
- Main construction works started in January 2026.
- National Capital Authority has granted the Works Approval after a public consultation process in 2025.
- Site set up and early works started on 14 October 2025.
- Check the travel impacts page for information on impacts due to the new lyric theatre work site.
Overview
A new lyric theatre will bring major shows such as Broadway musicals, international acts, ballet and opera to the city and create new business opportunities in the Civic and Cultural District.

The map shows the Canberra Theatre Centre and the new lyric theatre.
A new lyric theatre will be built on the north side of The Playhouse.
The lyric theatre will stage large scale theatrical shows. It will have a state-of-the-art stage and technical performance capability and excellent sound quality, like that of the Sydney Lyric Theatre and the Princess Theatre in Melbourne.
The new theatre will allow Canberra to host major national and international musicals, ballet shows, operas and international acts that currently don’t come to Canberra. Examples include Hamilton, Wicked, Lion King, Miss Saigon, Frozen, Mary Poppins.
ACT theatres are currently too small for big shows to be profitable. The new lyric theatre will seat up to 2,000 people, attracting top-tier performances and putting Canberra on the national touring map.
