In some situations, you can get medicine for a urinary tract infection (UTI) from an ACT pharmacy. You do not need a prescription.

Who can use this service

To qualify you must be:

  • female or a person with a uterus
  • aged 18 to 65 years (inclusive)
  • displaying symptoms of an uncomplicated UTI.

Symptoms of an uncomplicated UTI may include:

  • burning or stinging (hurting) when you urinate (wee)
  • a frequent or urgent need to urinate (wee).

A UTI is uncomplicated when you:

  • are otherwise healthy
  • are not pregnant
  • have no abnormalities or obstructions in your urinary tract
  • have an infection in the lower part of your urinary tract.

If you have symptoms of a serious infection your pharmacist will refer you to

  • a doctor (GP)
  • the emergency department.

Participating pharmacies

Please contact your local pharmacy to check if they offer this service. You may have to make an appointment with the pharmacy.

Pharmacies can charge a consultation fee for providing these services. This consultation fee will be in addition to the cost any medicines provided, if appropriate.
