An ACT Government Website

Funding: $4.689 million

The local shops are a great place for the community to come together, relax and support local businesses. The ACT Government maintains the public areas at these centres to make them safe and enjoyable for people.

Improvements keep paths in good shape, lights working and signs where they are needed. Upgraded parking and traffic arrangements make it easier to visit. Landscaping, new trees, playground equipment, seating, and artwork contribute to making these locations more vibrant.

So far, Gwydir Square shops in Kaleen and the Duffy shops have received upgrades. See what other shops are being improved.

Charnwood Group Centre

The Charnwood shops have many healthy plane trees that provide shade and beauty to the area. The pavement around the trees is too close to the roots. This has made the pavement lift and become a trip hazard.

The ACT Government has tried different ways to fix the paving damage however, it is continuing to present safety issues in a busy part of the local centre. Following engagement with the community in 2021 and 2022, a long-term solution was proposed and approved.

The completed upgrade of the shops has rectified this issue and also included:

  • repaved surfaces, new concrete and tree surrounds
  • installation of new street furniture including seating
  • new trees and improved tree health
  • increasing soft landscape to prevent the heat island effect
  • drainage improvements
  • artwork which depicts local mammal species with cut-outs for children to use as masks
  • improved pedestrian access with new concrete steps and kerb ramps
  • a new shade sail.
