Funding: $1.2 million joint funding from the Australian and ACT Governments for current concept phase.
The Molonglo Parkway Drive Connector will create a direct link between the Molonglo Town Centre and the Tuggeranong Parkway.
Current updates
- The Australian and ACT governments have provided joint funding to support the development of the concept design of the project.
- Infrastructure Canberra is progressing the refresh of concept design now. Detailed design and construction are planned for future years, to match surrounding development.
- AECOM has been selected as the Territory’s technical advisor to refresh the concept design.
Overview
The Molonglo Parkway Drive Connector is a new arterial road planned between Denman Prospect and the Molonglo Town Centre, connecting through to the Tuggeranong Parkway in the east.
It will be the third arterial road into the Molonglo district, creating a new access for people travelling by car, public transport, walking, and cycling.
The road is expected to be 2.8 kilometres long and is part of Molonglo’s future transport network identified in the ACT Transport Strategy 2020 and the Molonglo Valley District Strategy.
This project is part of an ongoing commitment from the ACT Government to improve planning and development in the Molonglo Valley.
Design
The concept design refresh will build on early options identified in the Molonglo East West Arterial Road Feasibility Study. It will support long term population growth in the Molonglo Valley.
These earlier studies may not reflect the ACT Government’s current position on the final design or alignment.
Project delivery
The project will be delivered in stages, with coordination across ACT Government agencies.
The first stage will run from John Gorton Drive, next to the Molonglo Town Centre. The Suburban Land Agency is designing and will deliver the stage one of the Molonglo Parkway Drive Connector, also known as the East West Arterial, in coordination with Infrastructure Canberra and the City and Environment Directorate.
Infrastructure Canberra will deliver stage two, which will extend the road to the Tuggeranong Parkway. Stage 2 includes a new bridge over the Molonglo River and a new grade separated interchange with the parkway.
Infrastructure Canberra will also consider the capacity of the Tuggeranong Parkway in this area as part of this project.
Community benefits
- Easier travel between Molonglo Valley and other parts of Canberra
- Support for the expansion of the area, planned to have a population of more than 70,000 once fully developed.
- Shared paths and pedestrian facilities to support safer active travel
- A new arterial link for heavy vehicles to access the area
- Stronger local economy by providing better connections to jobs, services, and local businesses.
Project features
- A new road link between John Gorton Drive and the Tuggeranong Parkway
- A new bridge over the Molonglo River
- A high-capacity interchange at the parkway.
Community engagement
The ACT Government will keep the community informed as planning progresses.
Opportunities to share feedback will be provided as the project moves through design and planning stages.
