Community pharmacies must keep the originals of dispensed prescriptions for 2 years, in accordance with the Medicines, Poisons and Therapeutic Goods Regulation 2008.

The pharmacy is responsible for protecting all prescriptions from loss, interference or misuse. This is in line with privacy principles in the Health Records (Privacy and Access) Act 1997.
