Information for health record keepers

Record keeping responsibilities are outlined in the Health Records (Privacy and Access) Act 1997 (the Act).

Record keepers should read the 12 privacy principles in the Act. The principles cover:

  • who can access records
  • which records are covered by the legislation
  • record keeper responsibilities
  • forms of access
  • records which may not be made available
  • the process of seeking access to health records.
