Visiting Bimberi Youth Justice Centre

Bimberi is the ACT’s youth detention centre for young people aged 12 to 21. Check visiting hours, book a visit and read the visiting rules.

Getting to Bimberi

Bimberi is on Morisset Road, Gungahlin.

By car

Access to Bimberi is from Morisset Road (off Flemington Road or Old Wells Station Road).

By public transport

Bus and light rail services are available through Transport Canberra.

Get approval to visit

You must get approval to visit a young person in Bimberi. When you have approval, you can book visits.

Visitors may also need approval from the young person's case manager and legal guardian.

To get approval, contact the family engagement officer or the unit manager.

Book a visit

To book a visit call 02 6205 9051.

You must book your visits 24 hours before you want to visit. You will not be able to enter Bimberi without booking.

When you book, ask how many people can visit with you. The maximum number can change depending on the current health and safety situation.

You can visit 4 days a week in visiting times. If we need to change or cancel a visiting time, we will let you know.

Visiting times

You can visit for 45 minutes.

You should arrive 15 minutes before your visiting time to sign in and go through the security check.

Visiting times are:

  • Tuesday: 3:30 and 4:30 pm
  • Thursday: 3:30 and 4:30 pm
  • Saturday: 9:00 am, 10:00 am, 11:00 am
  • Sunday: 3:00 pm, 4:00 pm and 5:00 pm
  • Weekday public holidays: 9:00 am, 10:00 am, 11:00 am

When you arrive

When you enter Bimberi, you must follow the rules, including not smoking inside the boundary gates.

When you arrive, you must:

  • show photo ID
  • sign a form acknowledging you understand the conditions of entry
  • get a security check.

You will not be allowed to visit if you appear under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Searches

You may be searched (scanning, frisk or ordinary search) before you enter or while in Bimberi.

Your property may also be searched.

Things you cannot bring in

Personal items

You cannot bring in personal items, such as bags or banned items. You’ll get a locker to store your things during the visit.

Food

You cannot bring in food. We provide all food for young people in Bimberi.

Banned items

You must not bring in banned items, give them to a young person or remove them from Bimberi.

Banned items in Bimberi
  • cigarettes, e-cigarette, vapes, cigarette papers, pipes and tobacco
  • alcohol, drugs and related equipment
  • lighters, matches and flints
  • weapons or firearms
  • non-issued keys
  • money, credit cards or bankcards
  • pornography or material containing adult, criminal or offensive content
  • prescription and non-prescription medication, other than those approved for the young person’s health and wellbeing
  • tools and related equipment
  • razor blades, knives or anything that can be used to cut
  • food stuffs, other than at mealtimes and provided by Bimberi
  • prams and bassinettes, other than those required for specific needs as approved
  • toiletry and grooming products other than those issued in Bimberi
  • needles, syringes or other sharps
  • cameras unless approved by Bimberi for a specific purpose
  • handbags, backpacks or bags of any kind
  • petrol, thinners or propellants of any kind
  • glues or aerosols
  • mirrors, glass or ceramics of any kind
  • jewellery unless approved by Bimberi
  • cosmetics unless approved by Bimberi
  • wire, rope or cord of any kind
  • mobile phones, smart electronic wearables include smart watches, or portable electronic equipment
  • personal possessions, unless approved.

Sometimes an item may be approved for a specific purpose or program.

During visits

Bimberi uses CCTV and audio monitoring. Your actions and voice may be recorded while at Bimberi.

You must follow the visiting rules and do what staff tell you to do. If you do not follow the rules, staff may stop the visit and ask you to leave.

It is an offence if you don’t do what staff ask, including if you don’t leave when they ask you to.

Visiting rules

You must not:

  • have physical contact
  • use bad language or behave in a way that may offend other people
  • disrupt other visits.

Adult visitors must look after children attending the visit.
