Deformed wing virus (DWV) has not been detected in the ACT.

About the disease

DWV is a devastating ailment affecting honeybees globally.

Why it is a problem

DWV leads to wing deformation of honeybees and other developmental issues that prevent bees from flying. This, in turn, hinders their ability to pollinate and produce honey.

What to look for

DWV causes deformed, crumpled or underdeveloped wings, rendering affected bees unable to fly.

Affected bees have a severely shortened lifespan, often surviving only 4 to 6 days after emergence, and are frequently expelled from the hive by other bees.

Bees with the virus may exhibit other signs, including shortened or rounded abdomens, discoloured bodies and paralysis.

DWV is not found in European honeybees in Australia.

How it spreads

This virus is primarily spread by the Varroa mite (Varroa destructor). Mites transmit the virus directly into the bees' blood while feeding on developing pupae or adult bees.

DWV can also spread through parent to offspring and from direct bee-to-bee contact through the sharing of food.
