Pre-clinical research
ACT Health supports health and medical researchers to conduct pre-clinical laboratory studies.
Pre-clinical studies allow researchers to assess toxicity and safety before starting clinical trials.
Pre-clinical research services
Physical Containment 2 (PC2) laboratories have the capacity to support researchers working in most medical fields including (but not limited to):
- autoimmunity and immunodeficiency
- paediatrics
- gastrointestinal cancers
- liver disease and cancer
- inflammatory bowel disease including Crohn's
- haematological malignancies.
Compliance process for pre-clinical research
Before you can work in a PC2 laboratory area you must complete training and exams for biological safety and gene technology. This training is done through the ANU HR Online Remote User System. If you are not affiliated with ANU, we can organise this for you.
Step 1: Provide information
Send us information about your research and affiliated institution by emailing health.research@act.gov.au
Step 2: Orientation
We will organise a time for orientation and laboratory induction. This session will take 30 minutes and will include a tour of the laboratory and office area, work safety pathway and an overview of mandatory training.
Step 3: Organising access
We will work with you to arrange for an access card so you can attend a demonstration and training.
When you have completed training, exams, induction and filled out all documents we will arrange for restricted area access.
Step 4: Additional requirements
Working with Genetically Modified Organisms
If your research requires work with Genetically Modified Organisms, an application must be submitted to the Office of Gene Technology Regulator.
Visit the website of the Office of Gene Technology Regulator.
Collecting samples from human patients
If your research includes collecting samples from human patients, information must be submitted to the ACT Health Human Research Ethics Committee.
