An ACT Government Website

We are engaging the community through a citizens’ jury. The jury will consider access to voluntary assisted dying for people who lose decision‑making capacity after they have been assessed as eligible, but before they can make their final decision.

About the citizens’ jury

A citizens’ jury brings together a diverse and representative group of community members to consider complex public policy issues.

The selection process will aim to reflect the demographics of the ACT community.

What the citizens’ jury will do

The citizens’ jury will:

  • consider a range of community perspectives
  • hear from experts and stakeholders
  • examine the issue in detail
  • develop recommendations for government

These recommendations will help inform an approach that reflects community views.

Independence of the process

An independent external provider will manage the citizens’ jury process, including recruiting jurors. This ensures the process is impartial.

Timing

The citizens’ jury process is expected to take place throughout 2027.

What happens next

The jury’s findings will inform future ACT Government policy development.

We will update this page as more information becomes available.
