Septic tanks and chemical toilets
In most instances, any allotment that is not connected to the reticulated sewer system will require some form of onsite wastewater management to deal with wastewater created by toilets.
Onsite wastewater management is the treatment and disposal of wastewater within the allotment boundaries.
Onsite wastewater systems that deal with toilet wastes include:
- septic tanks system
- onsite sewage system
- chemical toilets
- aerated wastewater treatment plants
- black water system.
If you need to install or alter an on-site wastewater system to manage toilet wastes, you must apply for approval under the Public Health Regulation 2000 prior to its installation or alteration.

On-site sewage systems are not permitted in the ACT where there is access to a reticulated sewerage network.
